How did a known poison & carcinogen get licensed for use in food as a sweetening agent ? Did a US president help to pay for his way into office by agreeing to the poisoning his own countrymen as well as most of the rest of the world ? Why does the US FDA and DEA persecute a safe alternative to this poison ?
Up until 1981 Aspartame was not approved for use in dry foods. For many years the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in the USA had refused to approve it because due to a number of clinical trials that showed that it could cause epileptic fit and brain tumors in laboratory animals. This state of affairs continued until President Reagan took office where upon he fired the FDA Commissioner who so steadfastly refused to approve the use of aspartame. Donald Rumsfeld was the CEO of Searle (funny how his name keeps bobbing to the top where ever there is corruption and greed involved), and, at the same time, part of Reagan's transition team when the FDA's board of inquiry was overruled to allow the marketing of Aspartame as a food additive. Following the passing of Aspartame by the FDA Rumsfield received as $12 million bonus. In his place of the former FDA commissioner a Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes was appointed as commissioner of the FDA and he ordered a review of the ban, but even then there was so much opposition to the approval of aspartame that a Board of Inquiry was set up. After months of deliberation and examination the Board very emphatically said: "Do not approve aspartame". Despite the recommendation of this board of experts Dr. Hayes OVERRULED his own Board of Inquiry.
Dr Hayes (Photo left) made the decision even though FDA Investigators, subject matter experts and Toxicologists were warning him about the dangers of aspartame to the human body. The Public Board of Inquiry that Dr Hayes had convened was made up of scientists, including the President of the American Association of Neuropathologists, voted unanimously against approval of aspartame. Dr Hayes’s original team of scientific experts was against approval of aspartame because the brain tumor data was so "worrisome” to them. Despite the recommendation of this board of experts Dr. Hayes OVERRULED his own Board of Inquiry.
So what had brought about the appointment of Dr Hayes to the FDA ? It appears that Ronald Regan was a friend of the CEO of Searle, the biggest maker at that time of aspartame, he has also donated large sum to the Ronald Reagan’s campaign funds. (In an ironic twist of fate Ronald Reagan later developed Alzheimer’s disease, a condition that aspartame can cause).
Interestingly soon after Dr Hayes later approved aspartame for carbonated beverages as well as dry food stuffs, he took a consulting position with the PR firm for G.D. Searle (maker of aspartame at the time) at salary of $1,000 per day. Several other FDA officials also later got posts in the aspartame industry as well. In another turn to the story in 1993 in an act that can only be described as unconscionable, the FDA approved aspartame as an ingredient in numerous food items that would always be heated to above 30°Degrees C despite the fact that nearly all studies, including some of the FDA’s own, concluded that heating compounds the toxic effects of aspartame many times over.
After approval in the USA the food companies then set about lobbying to have it’s use allowed in Europe. The lobbying must have worked because enormous pressure was then exerted on Europe to accept its use. Eventually is was accepted, and as soon as we are able to discover how this was achieved we will let you know on this page.
Aspartame Trials - Flawed & Corrupt
According to an Analysis conducted by Ralph G. Walton, MD, Chairman, The Center for Behavioral Medicine, Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of medicine he found that of 164 analyses on aspartame;
- 74 of them were sponsored directly by the aspartame industry.
- Of the 74 aspartame industry- sponsored claimed to have nothing wrong with the aspartame product. I would like to point out that its similar to the research done by the tobacco industry into the effects of smoking which consistently found that smoking caused no harm to human health !
- 90 were funded without any industry money behind them.
- Of the 90 non-sponsored analyses, 92% (83) found there to be one or more problems with the use of aspartame
- The other 7, which found to have no problems with aspartame, 6 of them were conducted by the FDA.
Worse was to follow because on 27 June 1996, without notice being given, the FDA removed all restrictions from aspartame allowing it to be used in any food stuff..
The truth about aspartame's toxicity is far different than what the food companies would have you believe. In February of 1994, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released the listing of adverse reactions reported to the FDA (DHHS 1994). Of all the 13,333 reports made to the FDA’s Adverse Reaction Monitoring System (ARMS) of reaction to anything in the USA aspartame accounted for more than 75% or 10,000 of all adverse reactions. In other words if any drug had ever received reports at this sort of rate it would have been withdrawn from sale. To put the reported reactions into some context you should note that even the FDA's admit that fewer then 1 % of those who have problems with something they consume ever report it to the FDA. So this means that we can reasonably assume that the 10,000 complaints hide a figure for reactions closer to 1,000,000. Another problem appears to be that even if you make a complaint about aspartame the FDA discourage its registration with them and there have been reports that they also appear to actively misdirect complaints about aspartame. Aspartame poisoning is so often mistaken for other conditions that it takes many people years to realize the cause of their medical condition if they ever realize it at all, including right up to the point where it has caused such extensive heart damage that they suddenly drop dead.
The dangers of aspartame poisoning have been a well guarded corporate secret since the 1980s. The research and history of aspartame dangers is conclusive as a cause of illness and toxic reactions in the human body. Aspartame dangers are the result of its chemical structure, while on the surface it appears to be simple, it does in fact have a complex metabolism. The food industry’s continued denial of its effects is nothing short of criminal, the complicity of politicians in North America and Europe is also nothing short of criminal. It is particularly dangerous to pregnant women, theirs babies, and to children. Any product containing it was removed from out household three years ago
The Deadly Health Effects Of Aspartame
Aspartame dangers are the common denominator for over 92 different health symptoms at the root of modern disease. The Aspartame Detoxification Program demonstrates the most effective way to reverse aspartame dangers by removing the underlying cause - aspartame.
This sugar substitute, sold commercially as Equal and NutraSweet, was hailed as the savior for dieters who for decades had put up with saccharine's unpleasant after taste. There are quite a few problems with aspartame. The first is phenylketonuria (PKU). One out of 20,000 babies is born without the ability to metabolize phenylalanine, one of the two amino acids in aspartame. Toxic levels of this substance in the blood can result in mental retardation. Beyond PKU, several scientists believe that aspartame might cause altered brain function and behavior changes in consumers. And many people have reported the following side effects from aspartame: Fibromyalgia Syndrome and symptoms of Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis symptoms, Dizziness, Headaches, Menstrual problems.
The structure of aspartame seems simple, but what a complicated structure aspartame really is. Two isolated amino acids in aspartame are fused together by its third component, deadly methanol. In this structure, methanol bonds the two amino acids together, but when released at a mere 86 degrees Fahrenheit, the methanol becomes a poisonous free radical.
Methanol breaks down into formic acid and formaldehyde, also used as an embalming fluid. Methanol is a dangerous neurotoxin, it is also known carcinogen, it causes retinal damage in the eye, it interferes with DNA replication, and causes birth defects.
Aspartic acid makes up forty percent of the structure of aspartame. Under excess conditions, the structure of aspartic acid can cause endocrine (hormone) disorders and vision problems. Aspartic acid is also a neuroexicter, which means its structure affects the central nervous system. Hyperactivity is stimulated by aspartic acid, so this structure is not good for ADD/ADHD conditions. It should also be avoided during pregnancy because of possible harm to the fetus,
Adverse reactions to aspartic acid are: headaches/migraines, nausea, abdominal pain, fatigue, sleep disorders, vision problems, anxiety attacks, depression, and asthma/chest tightness. The second isolated amino acid in aspartame's chemical structure is phenylalanine, fifty percent of aspartame's 3-D structure. Too much phenylalanine causes seizures, elevated blood plasma, is dangerous for pregnancy causing retardation, PMS caused by phenylalanine's blockage of serotonin, insomnia, and severe mood swings.
To make matters worse, aspartame interacts with anti-seizure medication such as Dilantin(Phenytoin) and similar drugs, and we have not yet even touched on the carcinogenic properties of aspartame
The Safe Alternative
Japan prohibited the use of chemical sweetners in the 1960's. A grassroots movement here could do the same, because there is a marvelous alternative: a natural herb called Stevia.
Stevia has been the sugar substitute of choice in Japan for forty years. It has no calories or chemicals. The leaf is 15 times sweeter than sugar and pure extract is about 300 times sweeter. It will not promote fungal growth or adversely effect blood sugar levels, in fact it actively helps to stabilise them.
But this innocuous-looking plant has also been a focal point of intrigue in the United States in recent years because of actions by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, yes that same corrupt body some of whose employees were bought off in order to get aspartame approved. Shipments of this herb have also been the attention of the heavy handed and dictatorial Drug Enforcement Agency’s tactics, with shipments being seized, impounded and destroyed.
The subject of searches and seizures, trade complaints and embargoes on importation, stevia has been handled at times by the FDA and DEA as if it were an illegal drug.
Since the passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), stevia can be sold legally in the United States, but only as a "dietary supplement." Even so, it can be found in many forms in most health-food stores, and is also incorporated into drinks, teas and other items (all labeled as "dietary supplements"). It cannot, however, be called a "sweetener" or even referred to as "sweet." To do so would render the product "adulterated," according to the FDA, and make it again subject to seizure.
We buy our Stevia from www.lef.org, however there are plenty of other suppliers
