The Dangers Of MSG
Put simplly Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is a neurotoxin and hormone disruptor, that means that the effects it can have on the human body are widespread and very profound. So why on earth do politicians and their regulatory body's continue to allow it's use even when it is know to destroy the health of citizens?
MSG is manufactured through a process of protein hydrolysis . The term “Food Flavor Enhancers” means and includes the products Monosodium Glutamate – MSG. Food Flavor Enhancers are most commonly used in dehydrated soups and gravies; canned meat, sausage and fish; soups and gravies; fish (preserved); sausage; prepared meals; tomato sauce and ketchup; mayonnaise; snack foods (mix in salt); soy sauce; crab, prawn and shellfish (preserved); Asian cuisine; prepared vegetables and a variety of other products. Monosodium glutamate (MSG), a universally used flavor enhancer, permeates our processed, packaged and frozen foods. For those sensitive to this substance, it is indeed a poison. The dose of MSG throughout our foods is increasing. It can even be found in cans of tuna, and injected into turkeys. It is served to us in the finest restaurants and to our children in school. Older people are particularly susceptible. Many elderly people suffer from depressions and balance difficulties caused by MSG. There are links, as well, to Alzheimer's and other neuro degenerative diseases. MSG has been linked to asthma, headaches, and heart irregularities. Behavioral and physical problems of children, such as incontinence and seizures, as well as attention deficit disorder (ADD), have been diagnosed and successfully treated as MSG disorders. MSG injected into mice reduces free glutathione levels but Glutathione protects children from mercury poisoning by chelating mercury. Now both Mercury and glutamic acid are common in many vaccines, they are used to bind the vaccines to the blood (that is why the over use of vaccines should be of concern to all parents). In addition to this route of mercury poisoning mercury in the environment is increasing due to pollution. It is interesting that autism is steadily rising, a rise that cannot be accounted for simply by better diagnosis. MSG removes the brains protection from mercury.

MSG: A Neurotoxin & Hormone Disruptor
Relevant to the toxic effects of MSG on the elderly (whose weakened blood-brain barriers would be less able to keep excess amounts of MSG from getting into the brain), there is sound science that suggests that the glutamic acid in MSG may act as a "slow neurotoxin," not resulting in observable damage such as dementia until years after the MSG was ingested. In addition, there is a copious literature on addiction, stroke, epilepsy, degenerative disorders (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and ALS, for example), brain trauma, neuropathic pain, schizophrenia, anxiety, and depression, seemingly diverse disease processes of the central nervous system that appear to be associated with the "glutamate cascade."
MSG-induced brain lesions in the area of the hypothalamus and/or accumulations of glutamic acid have been shown to cause each of the following:

Physiology Of MSG
Magnesium normally blocks the calcium channel from opening. Glutamate removes this block and opens the calcium channel, a normal reaction. However, when the glutamate levels become even slightly excessive, the calcium channels in some neural cells can get stuck open, leading to the destruction of those cells and adjacent cells. Not every nearby brain cell is affected, only the cells with glutamate receptors. The pumping action to remove excess glutamate back into the glial cells takes an enormous amount of energy in the form of the chemical ATP (adenosine triphosphate). In addition, it is important that there is adequate magnesium, and vitamins C, E, and beta carotene in order to prevent cell damage. If brain energy or any of the proper vitamins or minerals are lacking, neural cell death can occur. In severe cases of lack of brain energy or vitamins or minerals, a normal glutamate level can lead to cell death.
To put it as simply as possible: we are poisoning ourselves to death, but when you develop a brain tumor or degenerative brain disease you will never be able to prove a link back to those whole food manufacturers, they will be sitting back, rich on the earnings of their poisonous foods. The food companies even make the claim that glutamines are naturally occurring in the human body so consuming them is safe. This is a stunningly stupid statement on their part and I can only assume that it is directed to that portion of the population with an IQ below 80. Arsenic also occurs in the human body, but in tiny quantities, we do not use that as an excuse to arsenic to our food.

Corruption & Fraud
Studies designed, implemented, and/or supported by the glutamate industry are all questionable. All of the data presented by The Glutamate Association, the International Glutamate Technical Committee, both bought and paid for by the food industry, and their sponsors, as ‘proving’ that MSG is ‘safe’ appear to be flawed. Some, particularly those in which MSG and/or aspartame are used in placebos, appear to be FRAUDALENT – yet have never been investigated by the FDA. The EU did investigate them however no action was ever taken. We are aware of no person, institution, or agency, that has claimed that MSG is ‘safe,’ that does not have close financial ties to the food and/or drug industries, or that has not been paid by them.
In 1992, the FDA basically co-operated in a fraudulent study by appointing both Andrew G. Ebert, Ph.D., chairman of the International Glutamate Technical Committee (IGTC), and Kristin McNutt, Ph.D., paid spokesperson for the International Glutamate Technical Committee (IGTC), to the FDA Food Advisory Committee.
In 1992, the FDA funded ‘an independent study’ (their own words) conducted by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, with Expert Panel, members including four people with ties to the glutamate industry. Steve Taylor, Ph.D., who is (or was) The Institute for Food Technologists' Communicator on the subject of MSG has been a paid spokesperson for the IGTC for years.
Trade associations that represent glutamate industry interests include the International Food Information Council (IFIC) and the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI). IFIC actively fought, the presentation of a "60 Minutes" program on safety/hazards of MSG in 1991, and presently offers packets of materials that pretend to demonstrate that MSG is "safe." The IFIC packet includes a list of speakers who will attest to the safety of MSG. The American Academy of Allergy and Immunology is one of the organizations that has developed materials jointly with IFIC or IFIC's foundation. Their brochure entitled ‘Understanding Food Allergy’ includes deliberately false information as "Whenever MSG is added to food, it is listed on the label as monosodium glutamate." – it is NOT, certainly not in the USA anyway. Just so that we are left in no doubt as to who the FDA is protecting the FDA has also developed a brochure jointly with IFIC.
This sort of activity and science is CRIMINAL FRAUD – worse than that it is a fraud that is destroying the health of millions of people, often leading to their premature deaths.
Hidden MSG
Under EU and FDA regulation, hydrolyzed protein products may be used as ingredients in other products without mention of the original hydrolyzed protein product. BUT, hydrolyzed soy protein, when used in ‘flavoring(s)’, ‘natural flavoring(s)’, ‘natural flavor(s),’ and products called broth, bouillon, or natural chicken flavoring, etc., does not have to be mentioned on product labels when the food processor claims that the hydrolyzed protein is being used for purposes other than flavoring.
Use of MSG in food is growing. MSG is found in most soups, salad dressings, and processed meats; in some crackers, bread, canned tuna fish, most frozen entrees, ice cream, and frozen yogurt. It is often used in ‘low fat’ foods, along with sugar, to make up for the flavor lost when fat is reduced or eliminated.
Take Action Now
So just how is the food industry allowed to continue using this dreadful substance ?
Money. The food processing industry is very big and very, very powerful. They spend Billions every year lobbying in Washington and Brussels. look at the number of politicians who have part time and full time directorships on the boards of these companies, before, after and sometimes even during their terms in office. Also look at the number of politicians who own shares in these companies. MSG's make the processed gloop they turn out taste better, give it a longer shelf life and thus increase profits.
It is a typically short term view of course. It may make the food industry billion of extra profits, even keep people in work, but MSG's are costing us, the tax payers, both billions in cash terms and it's costing us our health and lives, and our children's.
Write to your political representative, join one of the groups working to have MSG's banned from the food chain, because there is NO excuse for them. There is nothing more important than your family's health, and lack of it will cost you far more than a few more cents on your food.
